TC4 titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V)

TC4 titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) is a medium-strength (α + β) type duplex titanium alloy, containing 6% of α-stabilizing element Al and 4% of β-stabilizing element V. This alloy has a series of advantages such as excellent comprehensive properties, good corrosion resistance, low density, high specific strength, and good toughness and weldability. It has been successfully applied in aerospace, petrochemical, shipbuilding, automotive, medical and other industries.


The long-term working temperature of TC4 alloy can reach 400°C. In the aviation industry, it is used to manufacture the fan and compressor disks and blades of engines, as well as important load-bearing components such as beams and joints in aircraft structures, and to manufacture various fasteners for aerospace applications. Due to its high specific strength, this alloy can replace structural steels such as 30CrMnSiA, achieving a weight reduction of about 30% for parts. Ti-6Al-4V/Gr5 is the American grade, and TC4 is the grade developed in China on this basis.

The characteristics of TC4 titanium alloy:

Chemical properties: When this alloy is heated for a long time below 430°C, a very thin and protective oxide film is formed. As the heating temperature rises, the oxide film thickens, but its protective property deteriorates.

Mechanical properties: Refer to the provisions of mechanical properties in the standards of GJB2218A-2008, GJB2219-1994, GJB1538A-2008, and GJB2505A-2008. This alloy can be strengthened through heat treatment.

Machining properties: This alloy is a typical difficult-to-machine material. Its poor thermal conductivity, high chemical activity, low elastic modulus, and serious work hardening result in a low cutting speed, a short tool life, and a low machining efficiency. When grinding this alloy, burns, ripples, and deformations are likely to occur, and its machining difficulty and cost are high.

This alloy is usually formed by hot forging or warm forging. Due to its poor thermal conductivity, the heating time should be appropriately extended compared with other materials, but overheating and burning should not be caused.

Applications: This alloy is very widely used in the domestic fastener industry and is the most commonly used titanium alloy grade. The products include various types of bolts, high-lock bolts, and a small number of nuts.


The tensile strength of TC4 titanium alloy is within the range of 800-1300MPa, and the shear strength is ≥ 670MPa. When working for a long time below 400°C and in situations where a higher specific strength is required, it is recommended to select this alloy. The producible products include bolts, screws, high-lock bolts, rivet bodies, washers, etc. of various specifications.
